Mitchell's son's big question of the week
Andrew, age 11, asks:
ME (ANDREW): What is your all time favorite daily comic strip? My favorite is Calvin & Hobbes.
DAD: You have excellent taste. But I can't decide between C&H, Doonesbury, or Bloom County--and oh yeah, Far Side. (We learned Gary Larson, the creator of Far Side, doesn't like people reprinting his comics...)
ME: Dad, you gotta choose!
DAD: Okay, okay! I have to go with Doonesbury for longevity and brilliance.
ME: Good. Anyone else out there?
Andrew

I've got to go with This Modern World by Tom Tomorrow and Calvin and Hobbes for sheer brilliance that will make me laugh till I cry. Also, This Modern World has the added plus of irritating my beloved, but misguided, republican dad.
I love that Calvin & Hobbes, myself.
But yeah, Doonesbury for duration and importance.
Doonesbury loses major points for poor artwork, the nod goes to C&H in that department. But as an honorary old fart, I've gotta go with a tie between L'il Abner and Pogo for all-time honors.
My favorite comic strip today is Boondocks. It is the most satisfying in terms of hard-edged comment and criticism.
I still enjoy and read daily Doonesbury and Far Side. I missed Calvin & Hobbes and Bloom County--never read them with a few exceptions.
I also strongly recommend Sylvia, by Nicole Hollander. I get it sent to me daily via e-mail, as I do, Boondocks.
My lousy local papers, The NY Times and the Journal News (Westchester County, NY) don't carry either of them.

For the "new" comics, I would add "La Cucaracha" and "Candorville" to "Boondocks."
And I should add a special nod to "Dilbert," which, contrary to Norman Solomon and some other leftists who lack a sense of humor, is a daily devastating attack on the belief that private enterprise is efficient and wise.
